The IPL auction is one of the biggest auction events in the world. Since 2008, IPL auctions have produced exciting entertainment. The bidding war to buy experienced and talented cricketers is watched by millions of cricket fans yearly.
The inaugural IPL auction was held in 2008, two months before the start of the first-ever season. Shane Warne was the first player to go under the hammer. Rajasthan Royals paid $4,50,000 to sign the legendary spinner. However, MS Dhoni was the highest purchase in 2008 auction after Chennai Super Kings splashed $1.5 Million for the ‘Captain Cool.’
Over the years, there have been plenty of big purchases in IPL. Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Sam Curran, Cameron Green, Ben Stokes, Chris Morris, Yuvraj Singh, Nicholas Pooran, and Ishan Kishan were sold for over ₹15 crore at the auctions. Starc is the most expensive buy in the history of the IPL auction. Kolkata Knight Riders secured the Aussie pacer for ₹24.75 crore in the 2024 auction.
The auction remains a key pre-IPL season event because franchises are keen to strengthen their squad from a huge pool of domestic and overseas players. As long as there are quality players available, franchises will continue to splash money at the auctions.
