Highlights of the Purple Cap Winners

The IPL Purple Cap winners have consistently showcased exceptional bowling skills, impacting the tournament. These bowlers have not only taken crucial wickets but also played pivotal roles in turning games around for their teams. Let’s dive into the highlights of these standout performers over the years.

Sohail Tanvir (2008)

With 22 wickets in the first season, Sohail Tanvir established the standard for the heritage of the Purple Cap. Representing Rajasthan Royal, his best figures of 6/14 stayed unsurpassed for more than ten years. In addition, he made history by becoming the first bowler to receive the purple cap.

RP Singh (2009)

RP Singh became the first Indian bowler to take home the Purple Cap in 2009. Deccan Chargers’ first IPL title triumph was the icing on the cake as he went on to pick 23 wickets.

Pragyan Ojha (2010)

India off-spinner Pragyan Ojha went on to pick 21 wickets as he turned up for Deccan Chargers in 2010. He was the peak of their bowlers, and he used the pitch available at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad to his advantage, bowling slower through the air and getting breakthroughs for his side consistently.

Lasith Malinga (2011)

While playing for the Mumbai Indians, Malinga quickly rose to prominence. However, his peak performance occurred in 2011, as his slower balls and unconventional yorkers completely transformed the game. The 28 wickets Lasith Malinga took in 2011 demonstrated his T20 cricket supremacy. Malinga, well-known for his toe-crushing Yorkers, is still a fan favorite.

Morne Morkel (2012)

Morkel gained widespread recognition while playing for the Delhi Daredevils due to his exceptional bounce and accuracy. He was a lanky fellow from South Africa who knew how to extract bounce from his height. He went on to win the purple cap after playing 16 matches and picking up 25 wickets.

Dwayne Bravo (2013 and 2015)

One of the best slow-ball bowlers, Bravo brought his unorthodox calypso style to the IPL. He went on to become the top wicket-taker not once, but twice. He picked up the purple cap in 2023 for taking 32 wickets. And then two years later, he again wore the cap as he picked up 26 wickets.

Mohit Sharma (2014)

One of the rare unorthodox Indian bowlers, Sharma was known to bowl slow-ball bouncers, which were particularly difficult to negotiate with. In the prime of his career, Sharma had helped CSK that season; however, he couldn’t take them to the trophy as he went on to become the top wicket taker with 23 wickets.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2016 and 2017)

India’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar helped his team, Sunrisers Hyderabad, immensely as he went on to get the purple cap for two successive years—in 2016 and 2017. In 2016, he led SRH to the trophy by picking up 23 wickets. Next year, he bettered his tally, picking up 26 wickets.

Andrew Tye (2018)

In the 2018 edition, it was Australia’s Andrew Tye who went on to get the purple cap as he picked up 24 wickets in 14 matches. His superb death bowling helped the Punjab Kings in that particular season.

Imran Tahir (2019)

An old workhorse, Tahir helped MS Dhoni set up wins after wins for CSK. An experienced customer, Tahir was the breakthrough bowler for CSK as the team reached the finals. Eventually CSK lost, but Tahir won the purple cap for picking up 26 wickets in 17 matches.

Kagiso Rabada (2020)

Kagiso Rabada’s explosive speed earned him the Purple Cap in 2020. He eventually picked thirty wickets. Delhi Capitals benefitted from his consistency as he, alongside his compatriot Anrich Nortje, hunted in packs.

Harshal Patel (2021 and 2024)

India’s Harshal Patel used his slower balls effectively as he went on to pick the purple cap twice in the gap of three years. While he picked up 32 wickets for RCB in 2021, three years later, he accounted for 24 wickets while playing for Punjab Kings.

Yuzvendra Chahal (2022)

The Rajasthan Royals played the final that season, with Chahal being the wrecker-in-chief. The leg spinner amassed 27 wickets in 17 matches, securing the purple cap in the process. Unfortunately, Rajasthan Royals lost to Gujarat Titans in the final.

Mohammed Shami (2023)

Shami had an amazing season with Gujarat Titans in 2023. The team reached the final, and Shami went on to get the purple cap for picking up 28 wickets in 17 matches.
